Opera Southwest and the Outpost, along with presenting partner SITE Santa Fe, are pleased to bring the new production Black Wall Street Albuquerque.
A “chamber work” that spans genres from jazz and music theater to opera and beyond, Black Wall Street is a personal-historical take on the Tulsa race riot of 1921 and depicts a history of Black American finance in New York City and beyond.
Mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran (familiar to New Mexico audiences from her 2015 project with Opera Southwest “Jazz goes to the Opera”) created Black Wall Street in collaboration with her husband, jazz pianist and Artistic Director for Jazz at the Kennedy Center, Jason Moran.
The story unearths the tangled roots of family, finance, legacy, violence, destruction, greed, and rebirth in the context of the Black experience in America.
