The 2013 Biennial Brabson Composers’ Competition
sponsored by the Brabson Library and Educational Foundation
This competition is for a short opera using original music for families and young audiences. The competition runs in a two-year cycle. The winning opera will receive multiple performances as a part of the OSW 2013-2014 and possible performances in future seasons. Winner will receive a $2,000 stipend for all score copying. Winner will also receive round trip airfare to Albuquerque plus housing and car for the final week of production and opening performances.
The Family and Young Audiences Opera Composition Competition is open to American composers.
The libretto must be based on topics dealing with the sciences or humanities and appropriate for families and young audiences.
Length: Under one hour
Orchestration: chamber size, up to 13 players maximum (electronic component acceptable)
Voices: up to 5 voices
Submitted opera may have been work-shopped, but cannot have already received a premiere performance.
Selected opera cannot have been commissioned by another opera company.
Selected opera cannot have received a first place award from any other competition.
Applicants must submit a completed or partially completed score of the opera that meets the competition requirements. Inclusion of a CD recording of work-shopped scenes or full opera is optional. Each entry must have a title page in the score that indicates the cast in order of appearance, with voice types,
and the size and instrumentation of the orchestra. The attached Entry Form must accompany each submission. Each entry must also include a separate envelope, with sufficient postage affixed, for return of materials. If no envelope
is included, materials will not be returned.
JUDGING IS BLIND. THEREFORE, COMPOSERS MUST REMOVE ALL IDENTIFICATION AND PRINTED NAMES FROM THE SUBMITTED MATERIALS TO ASSURE ANONYMITY.
